WEST LOS ANGELES REGIONAL LIBRARY
[DESIGN PROJECT]

The final semester of studio features a regional library located in West Los Angeles, replacing an existing branch library to serve a larger area demographic.

Focusing on integrating architecture and green environment, the design crafts a processional series of terraced spaces that lead upward toward a usable roof garden that functions as an extension of indoor space. Visual and physical connections are employed to generate a dialogue between the interior and exterior, blurring the traditional boundaries of built space. Transparency in vertical and horizontal glazing further breaks down the boundaries between the outside and inside, crafting a more tangible relationship to the natural environment, and throughout the building, traditional modes of enclosure are eroded to create a play of space. Circulation is placed along the perimeter of the building to serve as a buffer against solar exposure, and guests also have multiple means of access to the green rooftop areas.

Ultimately, the library experiments with traditional views on indoor and outdoor roles and gives space back to the public within the urban setting.
