[DESIGN PROJECT]
The design project of this study abroad semester called for an urban redesign of a large hospital complex in the middle Saintes, a small French town about 60 miles north of Bordeaux. The site lies on the ancient Roman birthplace of the city, and a new master plan was needed to replace the moving Saint Louis Hospital Center.

To create a reborn identity for the city, a "Culture and Discovery" center comprised of residential, commercial, and museum program, as well as a large park, is implemented to generate a revitalized city core. Using a parti of prominent building bars anchoring clusters of angulated building masses, the complex utilizes procession and framing to draw visitors up the plateau site, where they are encouraged to literally discover hidden courtyards, secret gardens, and the amazing view of the city offered by the bluffs on the eastern perimeter.

The museum component incorporates interactive art, history, science, and media exhibits highlighting the Saintonge region of France, encouraging user groups of all ages to learn about their city and have fun doing so.
