[DESIGN PROJECT]
Though the programmatic demands of this scheme--a large double-height computer lab, offices, conference rooms, a work room, and exhibition space--are relatively simple, the challenge of this project lies in trying to fit all of this within a small, pre-existing courtyard bounded by buildings on three sides as well as the structure of an annex on the fourth.

The design follows the goals of CENS by celebrating the marriage of nature and technology in a very experiential manner, creating a procession from ground level, through the exhibition space, over the lab space, and up to a roof garden. Space arrangement is relatively simple, with the smaller program elements such as officies and conference rooms are placed under the pre-existing structure, while the lab opens up in the courtyard area.

Skinning is predominantly made up of an abstracted “weave” of clear, gray, and brown glass placed in alternating vertical panels. Workstations are lined in rows to maximize space but are designed to give a sense of privacy without becoming claustrophobic. Circulation longitudinally along the south side anchors the building parti.
