[PRECEDENT STUDY]

| Second
Year began with a precedent study. Groups of two students again had two
weeks to research and document an assigned building, then construct a
large scale sectional model detailing its important characteristics.
Our building was the Lovell Beach House, by Rudolph Schindler. A beacon of the “International Style” of architecture, this house is supported by five concrerete frames shaped like square figure-8’s that help define a series of planes and volumes inside. The dynamic interior is further organized through a proportional system relative to the human scale. This pattern also governs the exterior elevations, determining window sizes and facade scaling. The building also originally featured outdoor sleeping areas, a staple of Schindler’s Los Angeles area inspired “health house” philosophy. Those decks have since been enclosed, and today, the house is privately owned and closed from the public. |
