[PRECEDENT STUDY]

| The spring semester was devoted to the library project, but before that could begin, a precedent study was needed to gain familiarity with libraries in general. This time, groups of four had about three weeks to research and document an assigned library, produce drawings, build a sectional light study model, and compose a Powerpoint presentation to be shown to the rest of the class.
The Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, located at Yale University, is a monumental gem set in an expansive concrete plaza. The building is sheathed with translucent marble panels hung on a wall truss system support by four thick pylons at each corner. This facade creates a dramatic and warmly lit interior that protects the priceless artifacts from direct solar exposure. Inside, a six story book tower surrounded by glass stands as a jeweled centerpiece. Though most of the rare books are located in a non-public underground facility, this centerpiece symbolizes the valuable information held within the library. |
